Monday 22nd April – The Country Fayre (clocks back 1 hour)

I stayed resting in bed as long as I could and only made it for the last 5 minutes of the Solo Travellers Get together!

After lunch we went to the Country Fayre. This is an annual event at the end of the World Voyage, with the money going to charity. We bought our Country Fayre currency and then took part in activities or bought items. The only activity I had any success at was 2 out of 3 hits with a wet sponge in the face of one of the crew members! I had told him he was absolutely safe with me (and the first throw went right over his head to prove it) and then I hit him twice. I was glad I had squeezed most of the water out of the sponge (but perhaps that is why I succeeded – the weight was not too heavy for throwing). I was very close at ‘Splat the rat’ but did not win. The dance hosts had been roped in for a silly game. I told Jorge he should be selling kisses instead. Next thing he started shouting ‘A dollar for a kiss’.

I did not stay to the end, but Jenny won a load of useless prizes in the Blackjack tournament. If she had been playing for real, she would have gained £9,000. (When she was young she worked in a casino, so never plays now as she knows it’s a mug’s game and finds it boring.)

Back in my room I became aware that in addition to the asthma, I am starting a cold!!!

We had a lovely night of dancing. One highlight was the Viennese Waltz with Rock. It went very well (and I think we were alone on the floor), but mainly because Rock adjusted his steps to the style that suits me best. There is one step he does that I always miss out on, so he left it out. Another highlight was the last waltz. I had been asked to dance it but had a coughing fit just at that moment so refused. That meant I was the only single lady sitting there not dancing. Paul, the singer, said he couldn’t have anyone not dancing so came and waltzed with me. In the parts where he had to sing, he laced his fingers in mine while holding the microphone, and we shuffled on the spot. A true gentleman!
